Buddhist Society  

  1. In organizing religious activities of the school Buddhist Society takes the initiative.
  2. Annual   all-night Pirith ceremony followed by an alms giving to Bhikkus.
  3. Organizing Dhamma sermons & discussions on every Pre-Poya day.
  4. Buddha   Pooja on every Friday with the participation of staff and all pupils.
  5. Sil-campaign to commemorate the Vesak Festival and obtaining freedom to a cow destined to be slaughtered.                         
  6. Vesak celebration and Bakthi –Gee program.
  7. Organizing Dhamma sermons and meditating programs on every Poson –Poya Day.
  8. Alms-giving to the Bhikkus of the Temple of the Tooth Relic
  9. Presenting utility items to inmates of Mental Hospital, Mulleriyawa & Mallika Children’s Home.

English Literary Association                                                                                                            

The main objective of the association is to improve English language skills of the members. Following are some of the activities in which the members participated in past few years.

  1. Participating in Zonal and regional level English language competitions and securing prominent places.     
  2. Participating in group language activities, recitals, drama (junior) elocution and written exercises
  3. Participating in International poetry competition organized in cooperation with U.S.A and Sri Lanka under Fulbright   program related to the topic “Natural Disasters” and securing first place and a few high grades passes by members in the year 2006.
  4. Students participated in Common Wealth English essay competition and securing higher level proficiencies.

Our school has secured membership of the “Global School Partnership” program organized by the British council and the ministry of education. Under this program it is expected to build up international student relationships and in the program launched in 2004 our members have built up relationships with the Omah High School in Northern Ireland.

More than two thousand students above grade 6 have contributed to this program and engaged in different projects. Students of both schools exchanged ideas through E mail and letters. Building up mutual relationships and understanding between different cultures of the world under Globalization is the aim of the project which has promoted English language skills and competency in information technology. Under this our school has been named for International award.

The association holds annual “English Day” programs, where our students’ abilities and skills are mirrored. Exhibitions, oratory, creative writing competition are also organized by the association.

Commerce Society     

Conducting Commerce work- shops and a series of subject oriented lectures to upgrade the knowledge and skills of pupils and publication of a Commerce Magazine “Sannidi” to bring out the skills and develop their knowledge and attitudes.

Media Unit    

Mass communication and media unit handles all public address systems from the “Sisuvisala” transmission chamber; in conducting school assembly, sports meet and all official functions of the school. Members have gained excellent competencies in handling such situations. Participation of members at the “SANJANANI”media festival in 2006 of the Kelaniya University has enriched immensely the capabilities of our members. Members of the media unit have the honor of being invited to take part in

  1. National colours awards ceremony
  2. Western Province colours awards ceremony
  3. Aid granting to children of Sri Lankan expatriate employees organized by Foreign Employment Bureau.

The unit trains new members Script writing, presenting news items and managing electronic media work.

Drug Abuse Prevention Society    

This unit functions with the objective of sending out to the society a set of healthy Sirimavians. Every Thursday morning the members of this unit meet and discuss their daily observations with respect to the objectives and emphasizes the importance of debating, presenting ones ideas, criticism and respect to others views when living in a society.

Photographic Society 

The members of the society cover all functions of the school including inter-house sport meet, New Year celebrations and prize giving. Members have secured prominent places at photographic exhibitions.

Practical Technology skills Society

This society aims at developing creative skills in children of the age group 11-14 and providing some variety to education confined to text books. Under the subject Practical and Technical skills introduced in 2006.Items and models produced by pupils in the teaching-learning process were collected and an exhibition was held.

Girl Guides Society & Little Friends Society

Every Year On the 22nd day of February, the birth day of Lord Baden Powell is commemorated. Enlisting new members and their oath taking ceremony is held in June.  In the year 2006 a Trade Fair was held at the Head Quarters of the Girl Guides Union. Also our Girls guides take part in the Christmas Carol entertainment programs.

Ran Kekulu” Savings Foundation  

The main objective of this unit is to inculcate the habit of saving in Sirimavians from young age onwards. Further this unit has contributed wherever possible necessary resources in organizing other subject related activities of the school. Under the sponsorship of this unit successful students at G.C.E. advanced level exam have been attached to practical training programs in Banks for a period of 6 months.

Philatelic Club 

Although this society was founded in Year 2004, it has become very popular among pupils with a very large membership. In the past few years our members were able to exhibit skills and creativity at the exhibitions organized by leading schools in Colombo in collaboration with the stamps unit of the Postal Development.

Oriental music Society

2006 Events

Aesthetic society staged entertainment program “Meyesi Rangana” at Elphinston Hall. At this function our members displayed their skill in music recitals and acting.

On the occasion of National Independence Day celebration our members participated representing our school.

Our members represented the school at the South Asian SARC Sports Festival taking part in the recital of National Song the responsibility of training the participants and. designing the costume for the occasions.

At the “Little Stars” entertainment program sponsored by the National Film Unit our members displayed remarkable skills.

2006 Achievements

  1. All Island music and Drama competition- Recital section 1st place zonal level and 2nd place regional level
  2. Classical Solo Recital 1st place, Western Province and 2nd place, Provincial level was won by Ridmika Dharmadasa.
  3. Creative musical item 2nd place zonal level was won by Poorni Kamaladiwela Arachchi.

Sisu Udana Unit

2006 Events 

Peoples Bank Sisu Udana unit functions within the School having the objective of fostering the habit of savings and to provide knowledge of banking activities.

Depending on the amount of Savings by pupils awarding presents were done by respective branches of the banks, thus creating an enthusiasm to contribute to the future capital development and investments of the country. Pupils participated in the “Sisu Udanayai –Vesak Udawai” project sponsored by the Peoples Bank and secured prizes for the school at the Vesak Lantern competition.

By participating in the “Do You Know Contest” under the themes “How banks contribute to the social development of the country and how banking systems operate under the new technology” won the third place. In this event pupils were able to communicate information with respect to the functions of banking system in the business world.

Carrier Guidance and Skills Society

While one of the main objectives of our society is providing guidance to members to choose suitable vocations according to their skills and aptitudes and directing them through this procedure to fitting into national and foreign employments is anticipated. From the inception our society in 19th May 2006 we have directed many activities within a short period.

We hold an annual “Ambition Test” to guide successful G.C.E O/L candidates to choose G.C.E. (A/L) courses. This is done under the guidance and direction of a panel of competent advisors.

Directing pupils to participate in exhibitions of national and international level such as Edex conducted by Royal College and Education exhibition organized by Ananda College.

Providing facilities to use inter-net through which information regarding vocational guidance is provided.

Guiding pupils anticipating G.C.E A/L results to chose suitable vocational fields.

Holding a “Skills Day” to enable pupils to bring out their aptitudes and skills thus providing opportunities to exhibit their professional skills and help personality development. We conducted Global Exposure 2007; a work shop and Seminars for Grade 12 and 13 students under the guidance of career councilors. We are making arrangements to hold this project annually.

Teachers Welfare Society

Functions mainly with the intention of welfare of more than 130 teachers in the staff. A musical Fiesta (Dilena Tharu) was held  in 2006 at Elphinston Hall to substantiate  the funds of the society. We were able to increase the amount of distress loans granted to teachers and double the amount of financial grants to members on family funeral occasions. Some other notable activities are

  1. Issue of a school identity card to confirm the identity of teachers.
  2. Organizing annual excursion to foster mutual goodwill and understanding among teachers.
  3. Religious activities to bless teachers falling seriously ill and subjected to physical handicaps.

Disaster Management Unit                                       

This society was inaugurated with the intention of making pupils aware of the security situation of the country and the need to know road-regulations. Before the area around the school became a high-security zone our members effectively managed traffic control.

Since special security division took over their duties our members assisted them successfully. With the assistance of officers from official Security Divisions work-shops are held to give training to pupils in the procedures to be followed in emergency situations and finding solutions to security problems. Steps are taken to entrust daily security check-ups in the school, to a teacher and two parents taking turns. Assistance of the police officers is obtained when necessary.

Sinhala Literature Society 

Many language activities are organized by this association to develop the pupils’ creativity.

Events

Sinhala language day program in March (2006), in which a number of lay and clergy prominent personalities participated awakened and kindled a new spirit in the minds of pupils with respect to our cultural and language heritage and created a sense of pride in Sinhala as our language. We are happy with the subsequent language enthusiasm generated in the minds of pupils as a result of this project.

The audio-visual entertainment program organized in 2006 by M.D. Gunasena & Company attracted both teachers and pupils and provided language enrichment experience.

Parallel to the state sponsored Literary Festival, School Literary Festival is held with great success.

Pupils engage in self-study activities on different literary topics put out creative productions in both prose and verse and stage drama items which reflect the changes in their language attitudes.

Contribution to develop mutual understanding between schools and directing pupils to contribute to the news paper publication “Sirisara”

Sinhala literary society is fully responsible for the organization of the annual school Arts Festival.

100% success in Sinhala language at G.C.E Advanced level is considered as an achievement of our effort.

Science and Mathematics Society  

Seminars are organized for G.C.E Advanced Level students, conducted by University staff members. The society organized “Science Day” in  year 2007 the theme was “Aviation”. The members of the Society participate in inter school quiz and debating competitions.

Law Circle          

This society was formed in Year 2006 with the objective of understanding the significance of rules and regulations of the school and the society and the importance of adherence to them. With the contributions of the Judicial Service Commission program of lecturers to the G.C.E advanced level students was conducted with emphasis on “Violence against Women”.

UNESCO Society  

2006 Events

Pupils participated in the United  Nations work shop held at Girls’high School Kandy in 2006.Knowledge and experience they gained were shared with other pupils.In the school premises the area around Grade 9,10 and 11 was landscaped by the society in the year 2006.

Cadets Platoon (Girls)

2006 Special Achievements

Two day training camp (night) was held followed by a camp at cadet head-quarters, Pannipitiya in which our platoon secured the 6th position out of thirty.

On  3rd of May 2006  twenty five  members of the platoon took part in an eight day training camp at Rantembe under the guidance of the teacher in charge of the platoon.

Our platoon secured the 10th position out of thirty two platoons. This was a very prestigious achievement for our platoon which took part for the first time in this type of a camp.

Novel Inventions Society    

This unit was set up with the intention of initiating members to the future society which needs citizens with creative skills to understand the technological and scientific knowledge of a globally expanding world of inventions.

We have obtained membership of Sri Lanka Society of New Inventors to strengthen our cause.

Services of Teacher Advisors of different regions have been solicited for this purpose to guide our members. We presented new creative items at the exhibition of the Sri Lanka Society of New Inventors and secured certificates of excellence in 2006.

Good Friend’s Society

This society was formed in 2005 under the themes “How to choose a good friend and how to be a good friend”. Now there are about 350 members in this society. Under the guidance of the lecturers from Colombo University workshops are held to discuss how “Good Friends Groups” should be activated.

Society of Fine arts

Workshops are held a view to develop creative skills in art. Students who are willing to join the Art Circle are welcome by the society.

Special Achievements

Year 2006

  1. Sathudi Upeni secured a place among the 10 best art productions at the Unilever International School project.
  2. At the Ceylinco Randaru program, Daneshi Dharsha Wagaarachchi secured a place for her creations. She also won the first place at the Colombo District Worlds Children’s Art Competition organized by the Monalisa Foundation.
  3. At the art competition of 2006 held at Southland Balika Vidyalaya, Nethmi Sandalika Sellahewa won the first place for best art creation.

2006 Events

A seminar in collaboration with Sri Lanka Telecom Institute was held with the intention of improving computer skills inter-net and E-mail usage. A few more seminars were held with the guidance of old girl undergraduates of University of Colombo and Kelaniya. Information Technology Day Program was held and Teaching Information Technology as a subject to G.C.E.  O/L students sitting for the Exam in 2008 has already commenced.

Leadership Foundation 

2006 and 2007 Events

Organizing the Leadership Day and workshop to commemorate the first Lady Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Madam Sirimavo Bandaranayeka who put Sri Lanka on the world political map. This function was ceremoniously held in the college hall on 08th August 2006.

  1. In 2007 Leadership Day was held as an extension of objectives of the leadership foundation
  2. Building up qualities of leadership in our pupils and providing strength to become future leaders through personality development.
  3. Providing a correct perspective of social conditions and guiding them to fit in successfully to the social structure thus leading to a successful living.

Environmental Society   

A few projects to keep the school environment clean and beautiful are in operation. Identifying environmental hazards and problems and procedures to minimize them are considered. Every Monday a short lecture on evaluating the importance of the environment is conducted. Recycling Project takes a special place in maintaining the cleanliness of the environment.

In 2006 “Children’s Environment Society” was inaugurated. Birthday present of a Rose plant by every pupil to the school helps to maintain the beauty of the school environment.

Astronomical Society

This Society was inaugurated in June 2000.All the students from grade 6 to grade 13, with an interest in the study of astronomy are welcome to the society. The society conducts annual night camps in the college. The members have participated in many quiz competitions and shown remarkable progress. With gratitude we record the assistance we get in our activities from the Young Astronomical Society –Rajagiriya, and Astronomical Society of Nalanda College.

The society is concerned with establishing a library consisting of reading materials relating to astronomy and annual quiz competitions in the near future.

Print Media Unit (Sirisara Creators’ Circle)

Print media is a fertile valley for the expression of aesthetic ideas generated by the human mind. The objective of our “Sirisara” creators circle is to sharpen and uncover the artistic talents of Sirimavians; under the theme “Pana Povamu Panhindata – Babalawamu Siwu Desama”. “Sirisara” news letter was launched in 2005 and school wallpaper has provided opportunities to large number of Sirimavians to contribute articles and express their creative talents. A program to put out the wallpaper under the title “Nirmana sendalla” is underway. Funding publications are also done by this unit. With the intention of promoting the creativity of the students a competition is organized by Sirisara creators’ circle; annually in the month of Literature. This is conducted in all the languages taught in school; certificates and presents are awarded to the winning creations.

This club will be formed with the determination of moving out to the global community and widening global boundaries by bringing the children closer together via the different languages they learn.
